# Proposed 2027 Amendment to Criminal Rule 17

## Current rulemaking fact supported

The Standing Committee approved final proposed Rule 17 amendments in June 2026 for submission to the Judicial Conference, and the Judiciary's pending-amendments page projects a December 1, 2027 effective date.

## Material limitation

This proposal is not current law. The Judiciary warns that projected amendments may be delayed or withdrawn, and the remaining Judicial Conference, Supreme Court, congressional-review, and effective-date steps control.
