Federal judge profiles and sentencing patterns, FY2002–FY2023. Private demo for my team; sign-in required.
Profiles of 4,074 federal judges, built from public sources: Federal Judicial Center service records, U.S. Sentencing Commission case data, CourtListener docket activity, and historical financial disclosures.
Judge-level sentencing statistics cover fiscal years 2002 through 2023 and exist for 1,394 judges. The links between judges and sentencing records come from two research datasets (JUSTFAIR and JUSTFAIR 2.0) and, in three courts, from judge codes in case numbers; they have not been checked against every court record. Judges without linked records show figures for their whole court, clearly labeled. Every profile states its years, sample size and how each figure was calculated.
The demo is private. Sign-in is by invitation, and it is not offered as a product.
The open question I am working on: whether publicly available case data reveals consistent patterns in judicial reasoning and procedural decisions, and how strong those signals are once the noise is accounted for.
