How to clean painted walls
Dust, marks and scuffs can make even a clean room look tired. Regular cleaning keeps walls looking good and extends the life of the paint.
- Wait two weeks after painting so the paint can fully cure.
- Dust first with a cloth, duster or vacuum brush.
- Wash gently with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soapy water, wrung out well. Wash from the bottom up, then rinse from the top down to avoid streaks.
- Spot-clean scuffs with a paste of baking soda and water. For grease, try a little grease-cutting dish soap in warm water.
- Always test first in an inconspicuous spot.
Touch-ups that blend in
Use leftover paint from your project whenever possible — or match the exact color and sheen. Use the same tool that was used originally: a small roller for rolled walls, a brush for brushed trim. Apply a small amount and feather the edges.
- Flat, eggshell and satin finishes show cleaning marks more easily — skip harsh chemicals and don't scrub hard.
- Avoid colored soaps and dyed sponges, especially on light colors.
- Magic erasers remove pen and marker, but can dull the finish — you may need a touch-up afterward.
- Never paint over mildew. Treat it with a 3:1 water-to-bleach mix (wear gloves and eye protection), let it sit 20 minutes, then rinse well. Test first.
A little paint history
Devoe & Raynolds traces its roots to a small paint shop in Manhattan, New York in 1754 — making it one of the oldest paint makers in America. After a long run of ownership changes, the Devoe brand eventually became part of PPG. Fittingly, it's red barns and old brands like this that inspire our name.
